BROWN’S TOWN: ART INSPIRED BY OHIO’S FOOTBALL HERITAGE
CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
The Paul Brown Museum at the Massillon Museum invites emerging and established artists 18
and older who are current or former residents of Ohio, to submit their artwork for the new
exhibition Brown’s Town: Art Inspired by Ohio’s Football Heritage. This exhibition will be on
display from August 21, 2024 through January 12, 2025 in the Paul Brown Museum gallery.
Artists are invited to submit their original artwork completed within the past five years inspired
by themes relating to the father of modern football, Paul Brown. These themes include Paul
Brown, the Massillon Tigers, Ohio State Buckeye football, Cleveland Browns, Cincinnati
Bengals, Miami University-Oxford/Cradle of Coaches, the Massillon Tiger Football Booster
Club/commitment to community, early professional football in northeast Ohio, Paul Brown
Tiger Stadium, the Massillon Tiger Swing Band, the Massillon/Canton McKinley Rivalry, and
Paul Brown’s coaching tree. This exhibit will offer a contemporary look at the legendary
coach’s inspiration throughout Ohio.
Eligibility
Open to present and former Ohio residents. Entrants must be at least 18 years of age. All
media will be considered. Works may not exceed the dimensions 80 inches x 80 inches. A
panel of three independent jurors will select work to be included and prizes to be awarded.
Photographs of Artwork
For the jurying process, artwork must be represented by digital photography. No more than
two photographs of each artwork will be allowed. All components of the artwork must be
visible in original submission. Each digital file must be 300-dpi in jpeg format. Do not
superimpose any information (including artist’s name) on the photographs. Digital files must
be labeled with the artist’s last name followed by the artwork title, corresponding exactly with
the name and title on the entry form (example: monet_waterlilies).
Submission Procedure
All entries should be submitted digitally through Submittable:
https://paulbrownmuseum.org/home/special-exhibits/ or www.MassMu.org/artist-opportunities.
No changes can be made after submission.
Eligible Work
Artwork must be completed within the past five years. If any staff or juror recognizes work
suspected to be older than five years, that piece will be disqualified from the show. Work must
be completely ready to hang or display. Works on paper must be framed or under glass or
plexiglass. Frames must be sturdy or in good condition. Clip and plastic box frames will not
be accepted. For safety reasons, all hanging work must have D-rings secured to the back.
Swath and wires may not be used and may need to be removed if impeding with D-rings. The
Museum is not responsible for damage to improperly prepared work. The Museum reserves
the right to reject work that is not ready for hanging. Each entry must be identified with the
label (which will be provided if accepted) completely filled out and securely attached to the
back. No components that were not part of the work upon submission may be added to
accepted artwork. If a frame is a significant element of an overall composition, the frame must
be included in the photograph of the artwork.
Labels
The exhibit labels and accompanying literature will be produced exactly from the entry forms.
Changes will not be allowed after submission. Labels for the back of artwork will be provided
upon acceptance of artwork.
Fees & Commission
Each artist may submit up to three works. A non-refundable $15 per piece of artwork or $30
for three pieces of artwork must accompany entries. Works may be for sale; the Museum will
retain a 30% commission.
Delivery
Artists are responsible for delivery of accepted artwork. Time slots will be sent to accepted
artists for delivery schedule set for August 9, 11, 12, and 13, 2024. Late work will be
disqualified from the exhibit. Artwork may be shipped at the artist’s expense, and shipping and
delivery schedule will be handled on a case-by-case basis. Shipped artwork not received by
August 14, 2024, will be excluded regardless of circumstances. Packing materials must be
clearly marked with the artist’s name if they are to be returned after the exhibition.
